No time for manners

My wife is not amused.

And posting this is going to keep our latest marital spat going.

Yes. A bowl of soup can be so good that you’ll shed civility and reject the many table manners that hve been burned into your brain since grandma slapped your elbows off the kitchen table with her wooden spoon.

Most who frequent Raleigh’s Dos Taquitos — arguably, the best Mexican restaurant in North Carolina — come for the establishment’s signature dish.

But the steak tacos are not the only thing on the menu worth waiting for — and, unless you make reservations, there is a REALLY good chance you will have to wait.

The chicken tortilla soup is such a well-balanced appetizer that it could mitigate the Mexican restaurant chips and salsa trap.

We’ve all experienced it.

“I ate so many chips and so much salsa that I’m not even hungry for my entrée.”

Well, once you dive into this soup, you might not want to reach back into the basket.

Don’t get me wrong.

The homemade chips and sweet and spicy salsa are wonderful.

And did I mention they deliver your cheese dip with a model train? A TRAIN!

But once you’re done licking the bowl — and even the most civilized of you will contemplate doing so — you’ll want to let that taste linger on your tongue as long as possible.

Having indulged in nearly every main course Dos Taquitos has to offer, it’s hard to recommend staying away from one.

The steak tacos are both simple and memorable.

The carne asada is otherworldly.

But the under-hyped chile relleno is a dark horse. The stuffing depends on which ingredients happen to be in season — from mashed plantains to shrimp. And the pepper has the slightest kick, avoiding being so spicy that your palate can’t tell the difference between chicken and steak.

So if, like me, you are, as my wife says, “unreasonably impatient,” call and reserve a table at what just might be the best bang for your buck in the Triangle.

Once you do, it will only be a matter of time before you’re impressing out-of-towners with your ability to pick the perfect dinner spot.

And if you see me there by myself, licking a soup bowl, just don’t tell my wife.

Please.

Help a guy maintain his dignity.
