A teenager brought a loaded handgun to Eastern Wayne High School today, according to several teachers with knowledge of the incident and an automated message that was sent to parents moments ago.
The school was not locked down at any point and the teachers said metal detectors on campus are often not used as students enter the building. Staff were alerted to the fire arm’s presence on campus by a concerned student.
Teachers were not notified until a staff meeting that was convened several hours after the student was taken into custody.
According to Wayne County Board of Education Policy Code 4303, possession of a firearm on school grounds can result in a 365-day suspension or expulsion.
The incident comes a week after shots were fired in the Southern Wayne High School parking lot during a basketball game.
