CBA basketball coach, facing DWI charge, resigns

More than a month after being placed on paid administrative leave by Wayne County Public Schools officials after being charged with driving while impaired, Charles B. Aycock physical education teacher and head basketball coach David Elmore no longer works for the school district.

Former assistant coach A.J. Mundle, who has been at the helm of the undefeated Golden Falcons squad for every game this season, will remain the team’s coach, WCPS public information officer Ken Derksen said.

Elmore, 33, resigned last week after nearly a decade in WCPS and is set to appear in court Jan. 11, 2022. He was arrested Oct. 29 — several hours after the CBA football team he served as an assistant coach of defeated Southern Wayne — on Hinnant Road near its intersection with Ivey Lane in Goldsboro, according to the arrest report.

WCPS officials stressed that Elmore was not involved in coaching activities at the time of his arrest or immediately before his arrest.

According to board policy, an employee convicted of a first offense of DWI would be subject to a “severe letter of reprimand placed in the employee’s personnel file” and be required to participate in a minimum of two counseling sessions with the district’s Employee Assistance Program. Should a second offense occur, consequences include further disciplinary action up to and including dismissal, according to the district policy.
