Allen honored by governor, General Assembly

Goldsboro Mayor Chuck Allen made a brief return to City Hall Monday evening to receive honors from Gov. Roy Cooper and the North Carolina General Assembly.

Allen was inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, an honor reserved for “persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exemplary accomplishments.”

Cooper was unable to attend the meeting in person, but sent the following video message, which was played for Allen and the others who attended the City Council’s session.

At the conclusion of Cooper’s message, state Rep. John Bell presented the mayor with a North Carolina flag that was flown over the General Assembly in his honor and a North Carolina General Assembly Certificate of Acknowledgment.

Allen, who is battling brain cancer, is in the midst of an indefinite leave of absence from his official duties.
