Less than two weeks after his last public appearance, Goldsboro Mayor Chuck Allen submitted his letter of resignation Tuesday morning — citing declining health, as he continues to battle brain cancer.
“The time has come,” the letter reads, adding that he felt the decision was what was “best” for the city.
Allen, who has served on the City Council since 1999, has been mayor since 2015.
In a March interview with the New Old North, Allen announced he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence to focus on his cancer fight — and to spend more time with his family, particularly his grandson Wes.
The little boy — and the rest of Allen’s family — were among those who converged on the Wayne County Courthouse June 4 to see the mayor immortalized by the N.C. Department of Transportation, as the “Chuck Allen Highway” was officially dedicated.
In his letter, Allen noted that his more than 20 years of service to his hometown wasn’t about power or ego. It was about a deep love for his city.
“I have done this simply because I care about Goldsboro, am very proud of Goldsboro and have always been committed to making it better.”
