Kenneth Fine, Editor
Kenneth Fine is an award-winning journalist who resides in Eastern North Carolina. His early work at the Goldsboro-News-Argus covering the military saw him travel to New York on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and Afghanistan in 2009 to cover the Global War on Terror. More recently, as the Raleigh Bureau Chief and News Editor of INDY Week, he co-authored an investigative series that earned national acclaim and was republished in The Guardian and Saveur Magazine.
Fine has received more than a dozen honors from the North Carolina Press Association since he began his journalism career in Goldsboro in 2005, but his most prestigious awards were earned during his time at the INDY, including the 2018 Phil D. Reed Environmental Writing Award, a 2018 Society of Environmental Journalists award, a 2018 Society for Professional Journalists Green Eyeshade Award, and a 2018 Society for Features Journalism award.
In addition to his role as editor of NewOldNorth.com, Fine currently serves as a secondary school English and Journalism teacher.
Renee Carey, Editor
Renee Carey has been an award-winning writer, editor and commentator in community newspaper markets for nearly 30 years. An Ohio native, she began her journalism career in high school, deciding then that storytelling was her calling. She honed her craft at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, earning a degree in journalism from the Honors Tutorial College. Since then, she has spent her career telling people’s stories, commenting on politics and life and teaching others how to do the same — an avocation that has introduced her to thousands of people who have inspired her and taught her many lessons about integrity, courage, faith and happiness. In 2005, Mrs. Carey became the first female editor of the Goldsboro News-Argus, a post she held for more than a decade. During her time in Wayne County, she worked with various community organizations, including the United Way and Literacy Connections.
