Former employee accuses Register of Deeds of stalking her

A former employee of the Register of Deeds Office has filed for a no-contact order against her former boss, alleging that Constance Coram has been stalking her.

A hearing has been ordered on the request, which was filed Tuesday morning at the Wayne County Courthouse.

Kathy Smith, a Goldsboro resident, resigned from the office after giving two weeks notice on Oct. 15, according to the handwritten description accompanying the application for the restraining order.

Smith states that she received a ride home from a co-worker that day and was sitting in the co-worker’s car talking when she saw Coram drive by her house. She said she could not sleep because she was worried about a potential confrontation with her former boss.

Then, on Nov. 5, according to the complaint, Smith said she and a family member were leaving their home when they again noticed Coram driving by. As they got closer to Coram’s car, Smith alleges Coram turned onto a side street, looked back at Smith and drove away.

Two days later, according to the complaint, Smith said she was with a family member at the grocery store when she noticed Coram’s car pulling through the parking lot.

She said Coram pulled up beside them, got out of her vehicle and confronted her.

“She got out and walked up to me asking me why did I tell them she was yelling at me,” Smith described in the complaint. “I told her she needed to leave me alone and we got into the car and left.”

A judge will hear the case Nov. 22 to determine whether the order will be granted. According to a copy of the request, which was obtained by the New Old North, both parties are required to attend the hearing.
