Wayne County Board of Education Vice Chairman Dr. Joe Democko resigned Monday, citing personal reasons.
At the end of the board’s meeting, Democko said he was stepping down Oct. 1 because his mother, who lives in New York, has received a “terrible diagnosis” — adding that his father passed away at the beginning of his tenure.
The vice chairman said while he enjoyed serving the community, the demands of his board seat and his business would not leave him with sufficient time to help care for his mother.
“I’ll be dedicating more of my time to my family,” he said.
There was no immediate discussion of a procedure to replace Democko or who might be interested in replacing him.
He is a good one. Appreciate his service to the students and staff of Wayne County Schools. Says a lot about his character to step down for his family.
