The applicants’ names have been released and the field is a crowded one.
The race for the next Goldsboro mayor is officially on.
Hopefuls had until 5 p.m. today to submit applications and, in a little over a week, each will have an opportunity to make their case to members of the Goldsboro City Council.
The 10-person list includes:
• Mayor Pro Tem David Ham
• David Craig
• Stephanie Bostic
• Elton Brewington
• Trenton Haire
• Charles Henry
• Alicia Britt Pierce
• Dexter Taylor
• Roderick White
• Kaelon Williams
The board will hear presentations at its August 2 meeting, with a vote currently scheduled for Aug. 16.
Different scenarios, including what happens in the event no candidate gets a majority of eligible council member votes — Ham, because he is in the running, will not be allowed to vote — can be found here:

Since Ham will not be permitted to vote, two other council members would need to follow Polack to secure the seat for the mayor pro tem.
Former Mayor Chuck Allen resigned June 15, citing health concerns as he continues to battle brain cancer. The last time a mayor had to be replaced during their term was 2002, when then-Mayor Hal Plonk died.
His replacement, Al King, was appointed by the board without an application and presentation process.
