After months of searching and interviewing, the Wayne County Board of Education found the district’s new superintendent in its own back yard.
The board met this evening and approved the hiring of Dr. David Lewis, assistant superintendent of accountability/information technology, as the district’s new leader for the next four years.
Lewis has been serving as interim superintendent since the departure of Dr. James Merrill, who was hired on a limited contract through last December days after Dr. Michael Dunsmore resigned in June 2020.
The board had hired the N.C. School Board Association to assist in its superintendent search and members reviewed applications and interviewed candidates before making the decision to go with Lewis.
Lewis, a veteran administrator with 29 years of public education experience that includes teaching, school administration, and district leadership, has served as an assistant superintendent since 2013.
Prior to that, he served as executive director for information technology/athletics, director of elementary education/athletics, principal of Rosewood Elementary, principal of Rosewood High, and assistant principal of Goldsboro High.
