“Eastbound & Downtown” wins first place, among five New Old North awards in state press contest

In its first year as a member of the North Carolina Press Association, the New Old North brought five awards home to Wayne County from one of the largest journalism contests in the nation.

The 2020 NCPA Editorial and Advertising Contest saw more than 4,000 entries submitted by more than 100 news organizations.

Among the New Old North’s honors were awards for sports and news photography, sports commentary, profile feature writing and a first-place award for NewOldNorth.com’s sister publication, “Eastbound & Downtown.”

The next issue of the award-winning quarterly magazine is currently in production and will be distributed across the county in early April.

Those who wish to advertise still have a few weeks to reserve their spot and can contact Sales Associate Joanne Littleton at jlittleton@newoldnorth.com or New Old North editor Kenneth Fine at kfine@newoldnorth.com

The following photographs brought home honors in sports and general news photography, respectively:

This photograph of then-Goldsboro High School senior Christian Bullock fighting off a Southern Wayne defender on his way to the basket won first place in sports photography.
This photograph from the 2019 Veterans Day Parade in downtown Goldsboro won second place in general news photography.

Fine’s series of sports commentaries, including a look back at Goldsboro High School and Charles B. Aycock’s successful high school football campaigns, caught the judges’ attention, too.
