Wayne County officials confirmed that Ray Mayo, chairman of the Board of Commissioners, passed away Thursday evening.
Fellow commissioner Wayne Aycock said that Mayo’s death is a tremendous loss for the county.
“He was a good man,” Aycock said. “We were family.”
In a news release, Commission Vice Chairman Joe Daughtery expressed his shock at Mayo’s “sudden and unexpected” passing.
“Commissioner Mayo served Wayne County for almost a decade, and was proud to serve in the leadership role for nearly a year. He advocated for Northern Wayne County improvements including street and sewer improvements, help for municipalities, improvements in school facilities, and general quality of life,” he said. “His strong Christian faith has, and will be, an inspiration to many. Please remember and pray for Ray’s family as we all deal with this tragedy.”
Flags at all county facilities will be flown at half-staff in Mayo’s honor.
