Saints’ day

MOUNT OLIVE — It wasn’t the celebration they anticipated before COVID-19 forced school closures and disrupted their senior years, but members of the Southern Wayne High School Class of 2020 were honored Tuesday evening by parents, teachers, administrators, Mount Olive residents and members of the Board of Education.

The Saints might not have been marching, but it was certainly a parade.

There is still time to advertise — or honor your graduate with a tribute — in our special
Class of 2020 edition of “Eastbound & Downtown.” Call the number above or email newoldnorth@gmail.com for more information.

Some poked their heads out of car windows to wave to those who showed up to congratulate them.

Others rode atop family vehicles and in the backs of pickup trucks — live-streaming the procession on social media.

There were signs, flowers, balloons and banners.

Windows had Southern Wayne red messages painted on them.

But perhaps most importantly, there were smiles. And lots of them.

Now, like the rest of the county’s seniors, the Saints will have to wait to see what type of graduation ceremony the state allows, as WCPS Superintendent Dr. Michael Dunsmore assured them they will have commencement, in some form, this summer.
