Aycock principal Dr. Earl Moore announces retirement

In a news release that will almost certainly stun the Wayne County Public Schools community, the district confirmed today that Charles B. Aycock principal Dr. Earl Moore is retiring Feb. 28 after a career in education that has spanned more than four decades.

No replacement has been selected, but Moore, the 2018-19 Principal of the Year, will certainly leave big shoes to fill.

“I love Charles B. Aycock High School,” Moore said in the release. “I began teaching here in February 1977 and I will retire in the same month 43 years later. My life and career has come full circle and I am forever indebted to people in the northern end of the county who have embraced and supported me in every position that I have held at this school. This school is like a home and a family and I am filled with a mixture of emotions.”

News of Moore’s retirement won’t just impact the staff and students at CBA.

In fact, it would be difficult to find a school in the district that hasn’t been touched by a man who has mentored everyone from Wayne School of Engineering Principal Gary Hales and Goldsboro High School Principal Ryan Nelson to those in charge of Wayne Academy, Eastern Wayne Middle School, Brogden Middle School and Norwayne.

But it is the thousands of students he has come into contact with over the years that WCPS Superintendent Dr. Michael Dunsmore said owe him, perhaps, the most.

“Dr. Moore has dedicated much of his life and his education career building up students and helping them be successful in the classroom and in life,” he said. “Wayne County Public Schools is grateful for his leadership, his service, and contributions to public education both here in Wayne County and across North Carolina. We wish him the very best.”
