Maps would diversify population at Goldsboro High, make Tommy’s Road a feeder school for Dillard, Greenwood

Two Wayne County Public Schools redistricting options for the 2020-21 school year were unveiled this evening during a public meeting held at Wayne Community College.

Both would drastically change the demographics at Dillard Middle School, Greenwood Middle School and Goldsboro High School — with one map increasing the white population at GHS from 3% to more than 25%.

The maps, which were created during a months-long process that began in February when the Board of Education unanimously approved Cropper GIS Consultants and McKibben Demographic Research to lead the redistricting effort, can be seen below or by clicking here.

In both scenarios, Greenwood Middle would change from a school that serves fifth- through eighth-graders to one that serves sixth- through eighth-graders. But its feeder school would be Tommy’s Road Elementary, a change from the current arrangement that sees Tommy’s Road students feed into Eastern Wayne Middle and Norwayne. Those same students would ultimately attend GHS.

“Instead of having them go north, they’re going south,” said Matthew Cropper, founder and president of Cropper GIS. “This was done to balance utilization and also demographics.”

Matthew Cropper explains how the maps unveiled this evening differ from the existing one.

Both options would see Goldsboro High absorb students currently attending Charles B. Aycock and lose students to Eastern Wayne High School.

Cropper noted that the maps are subject to change during the two committee meetings scheduled between now and the board’s expected vote on whichever map is ultimately recommended at the end of November, so WCPS officials are urging the public to share thoughts on the potential changes.
