What a difference a few weeks makes.
There was no controversy at the conclusion of tonight’s rematch between Goldsboro High School and Southern Wayne — no shootout like the one that ended November 25 in a 101-95 score.
This one was all Cougars.
GHS got its revenge on the Saints Monday evening in Dudley 85-43 in a chippy contest that saw SWHS’s star guard Jamari Leach pulled from the game after undercutting Cougar forward Xavion Atkinson as he ascended for a dunk.
The flagrant foul seemed to light a fire under Atkinson who provided plenty of fireworks after he pulled himself up off the hardwoods, including an explosive windmill dunk.
But he wasn’t the only Cougar to turn in a strong performance.
Senior Christian Bullock was dominant shooting and distributing the ball.
And the supporting cast — from freshman TaKorrie Faison to defensive specialist Jykeis Mclean — were equally impressive.
Next up for the Cougars is a rematch with bitter rival Eastern Wayne Friday at GHS. The Saints travel to Cape Fear Christian on Wednesday.
