Behind strong play from guard Jamari Leach and a stellar three-point shooting performance by his team, the Southern Wayne men’s basketball team was in control for much of its road game at Goldsboro High School Monday evening.
But the Cougars rallied and down by only two points with less than 40 seconds remaining in a 95-93 shootout, GHS head coach Jamaal Croom called a timeout to draw up a play that might have sent the game into overtime — or perhaps, stolen a win for the home team.
But as the Cougars left their huddle, the officials notified Croom that his team was out of timeouts and called a technical foul that ultimately sealed the game for the Saints, who won 101-95 and completed a varsity sweep of their biggest rival on the road.
